Mother Blogs Best
For nearly two years, Ann Imig has shared the ups, downs and downright funny moments of motherhood on her blog, annimig.com. Now she’s taking her parenting perspective to a new audience. Imig is directing and producing Listen to Your Mother, a live show with Madison-area writers reading their words on “the real experience of motherhood.” As Imig prepared for the Mother’s Day event, she answered a few questions about this new labor of love.
How did you come up with the idea of Listen to Your Mother?
The idea came to me in a Zen moment, while enjoying my routine Lego search-and-recovery mission. I think I had just reattached a space policeman’s head to his body (thus sparing him from the cat’s esophagus) and I said to myself, “If I can do this, I can do anything.” Writing is an extension of performing for me, and I’ve missed interacting with a live audience—one that doesn’t interrupt me constantly with demands for rice milk and Cheez-Its.
What has blogging about motherhood meant to you?
Humor blogging specifically has provided a creative outlet for my parenting stress, by challenging me to find the humor in even the most stressful (potty-training) parenting (potty-training) moments (potty-training). Also, blogging has meant making meaningful connections with other parents and writers—some of those connections evolving into friendships and trusted colleagues.
What are your goals for the show?
I hope the writers enjoy the thrill of performing and of offering their talent in a new way—where their literal voice can be heard in addition to their voice on the page. I hope the audience enjoys a celebration of motherhood, one originating from the genuine voices of those who know the beauty, the beast and the barely rested of being a mom.
Listen to Your Mother takes place May 9 at 3 p.m. at the Barrymore Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the door. listentoyourmothershow.blogspot.com

***I had just reattached a space policeman’s head to his body (thus sparing him from the cat’s esophagus)***
W.T.F. is a cat’s esophagus doing in that sentence?
The picture is adorable. I do not see an esophagusless cat anywhere around you.
Very cool. Always nice to get some positive press.
So cool…congrats!
Nice going (potty training). Hey, does that contest include airfare? Just wondering…
that is awesome! I am so proud of you. 🙂
Congratulations on the show. I wish it weren’t 1000 miles away. Let me know when you take the show on the road.
very cool. very cool indeed!
Such a cool event Ann. Bravo!
That is very nice. Please don’t get too big now, because you are so sweet, and still talk to us, your commenters.
Beautiful job.
This is so great, Ann!
I really need to learn how to teleport myself to Madison. Is teleport a word? It’s early.
Whatever. You know what I mean…
So proud of you words can’t describe! And SUCH a great picture. Turned out great!

This so makes me wish I lived in Madison…
You. are. AWESOME.
(and yeah, Heather, teleport! Or drive! Just get here!)
Congrats on the article and the show!

First of all congratulations on the show – what a fabulous idea and I wish you all the very best of British luck with it!! I love your comments in the article – but fear the repeated mention of potty training as we are going to be forced to embark upon it this summer (my daughter who is three cannot go to her preschool in the fall otherwise!).
Just don’t forget about your blog – because we all look forward to your writing on here.
Fantastic about your show! Live streaming? Can’t wait. I hope you are celebrating!
Very cool and very best wishes on a great Mother’s Day show!
This has inspired a sentence I never thought I’d say: I wish I lived in Wisconsin. Not that Jersey is better. In fact, it’s probably worse. Except for the ‘documentary’ about our ‘shore.’ That is pretty awesome.
And I gotta go because my not-yet-potty-trained-toddler is circling the dining room table for a non-runway landing.
Fabulous!
Wish I could be there to witness the excellence in person… Will you be videotaping, Youtubing and linking the event? (Youtubing? You know what I mean.)
You rock so hard.
congrats, ann!
You are awesome. I am still dying of “why don’t I live in Madison” itis. XO.
WOW! Great press. Congratulations and I hope the show (which sounds fabulous!) is a huge success.
Cheers,
jj

Yay! Nice piece.
I’m talking about the article, by the way.
Congratulations! What a great idea. I just found you, and enjoying your madness 🙂
I love your zen moment. SOOOO wish I could be there. It’s just too long of a drive from my neighborhood though. Any chances you’ll be filming it?
This is really great. Will you sign my ticket stub? 🙂
All I have to say is….that picture of you and your boys is just awesome. I’m kinda in love with all of you.
