I used to have an adorable/tedious night time routine with Four. Lately Husband does a lot of the bedtime routine, as I tend to the twins: LTYM Show and ASUS Laptop.
The other night, however, I did something I normally avoid–imaginary play with Four (I’m more the story-reading, leave them to their own devices, Uno-if-necessary parent).
So Four wears his blanket like a cape and dubs himself The King. He invites me to play his Queen:
“MY QUEEN! MY QUEEN!”
“Yes My King”
“LET’S GO BATTLE. YOU CAN USE YOUR CRUMPLE UPS POWER.”
“Umm..Yo crumple up crumple up.”
“NO CRUMPLE UPS GO LIKE THIS: (machine gun spray sound-effect, sunburst arms, CLAP!) CRUMPLE UP CRUMPLE UP!”
“But My King, I am missing the genetic make up for those awesome sound effects, My King.”
“I AM THE KING AND I SAY WHAT TO DO AND YOU DO IT”
“Not in this Kingdom, My King. ”
“BUT I AM THE KING”
“YO KING? CRUMPLE UP CRUMPLE UP” (sunburst arms, CLAP!, machine gun-ish sound)…
Four reacts with fancy battle/Capoeira moves.
“MY QUEEN NOW IT’S TIME FOR US TO SLEEP. THIS IS WHERE YOU SLEEP.” Four pats space next to him on bed.
“I love you my king.” I go in for a hug.
“I love you my queen.” loud/wet preschooler-in-your-eardrum whisper.
“Goodnight my King.” I stand to leave…
“MY QUEEN!”
“Goodnight. It’s time for bed. Now.”
“MY QUEEN! YOU HAVE TO SLEEP WITH ME OR I WILL KILL YOU”
It appears you’ve given birth to Henry the VIII.
Weird, my husband and I have the same role play almost every night.
break a leg…
that’s the appropriate theatre thing to say, right?
And four?
that’s totally what he said…
Good luck!! I’ll be thinking about you guys. 🙂
Sounds like you’re raising a little actor there!
CRUMPLE UPS, CRUMPLE UPS!
Now I know what I’ll be yelling from the stage when I lose the script.
THE LAST LINE?
A slice of life.
wait, did someone say crumpets? CRUMPETS?
dang, now I’m hungry again.
All Hail the Queen.
LTYM. It’s gonna be so awesomely awesome. I wish that I could be there, man. I will be applauding from Georgia. Hugs to you and to Lisa for the L.A. show!
I don’t know why anyone cares about the Royals when we have this.
This is why it’s so much fun being the mom to a little boy. I can’t get enough of this stuff, really. Even if it means bedtimes of 10 p.m. every night and waking up with little toes in my face.
Summer was very impatient with her dad the other day because he wasn’t playing barbie dolls correctly. Imaginary play is tiring.
We’ve shortened the bedtime routine enormously.
Your king wields much power. My princesses think they do but they would be wrong.
Oh my Queen, I’m so excited for you and your grandson’s wedding tomorrow!
It’s gonna be epic, My Queen!
XO

I don’t have those noises down either. Boo! I have tried, but I just can’t get it. I wish I could join you all at these fun shows. I would love to meet you in person. One of these days…
It is good to be the king.
You ARE the Queen. That story is hysterical.

I used to play Queen with my daughters. My version was more like Carol Brunet, wacky British accent and all, and I used to biff them with my ‘staff’.
Great Fun!!
I am also the story-reading, leave them to their own devices, Uno-if-necessary parent, so I understand. And I just bought tickets for my mom for the Valpo show! Very excited!
I’m giddy with excitement about today’s Austin show and I live over 1,000 miles away. Rock it, Wendi!
This post clarifies something for me: there really IS a gene for machine-gun-fire noises. Finally, a mystery solved.
I miss the 4. I loved the 4. Now my youngest is 9. He’s still the king… it’s just harder to get him to go to bed.
Great post.
Cheers,
Casey
Really, the sunburst / machine gun fire takes the cake. My queen, how do you live with so much royalty in your life?
Good luck with LTYM! Thinking of you.
Ah AH!!
I guess this is what I have to expect in the next future! 🙂
really nice blog!!
You’ve been secretly reading him Othello, haven’t you?
This is so funny. crumple-ups I thought was crumple You-Pee-Ess so I thought it was all about delivery items.
Now I know what I’ll be yelling from the stage when I lose the script.
